CORTLAND STATE WINS FIRST NATIONAL TITLE!

Crammed into two school vans, the Cortland State women’s soccer team traveled for 40 hours straight (1,700 miles) from Cortland, N.Y. to Colorado Springs, Colorado in November 1980. The long voyage was a historic one for both Lady Dragons and United States women’s collegiate soccer.

Soccer had been played by Cortland College women since the 1920s, so it was no surprise that the Lady Dragons became a dominating force when the college adopted the sport at the varsity level in 1978. Two years later, on a wintery day in Colorado, the Lady Dragons reached the ultimate pinnacle by defeating UCLA 5-1 to win the first national championship ever offered in that sport.
